Brooke C. Obie, JD, MFA, is a graduate of Hampton University, summa cum laude and Mercer University School of Law where she was the Eleventh Circuit Survey Editor of the Mercer Law Review. While there, she worked on the legal defense “dream team” of rapper T.I. for the high-profile case, U.S. v. Harris. Brooke also received her MFA in Creative Writing at The New School, was a 2014 finalist for the Fulbright Fellowship award in Creative Writing and is the author of her debut speculative history novel Book of Addis: Cradled Embers (For the People Press, 2016). In 2017, Book of Addis: Cradled Embers won the Black Caucus of the American Library Association Literary Award for best self-published fiction. She has attended Columbia University’s creative writing workshop in Paris, France and the Callaloo Journal of African Arts and Letters’ Creative Writing Workshop at Oxford University, Oxford, England, where she began work on the sequel to her novel: Book of Addis: Burning Plains. Brooke has a certificate in advanced legal research, writing and drafting. Her writing has appeared in Ebony, The Root, Teen Vogue, NBC BLK, Marie Claire, The Los Angeles Review of Books and more.
