J. Marcellus Burke is a retired Chicago police detective. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1944 to 1946. In January 1945 Burke was sent to Michigan State University to be trained as a combat engineer. He was deployed to Austria and Germany in 1946. He became fluent in German while serving in the military, frequently acting as a translator. This experience stimulated his focus upon Afro-Germans and Burke has German lineage from his grandparents. This novel is a welcome contribution to the literature about World War II.
