Two Naomis (HarperCollins), with Audrey Vernick, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award, was a Kirkus Book of the Year, and is a Junior Library Guild Selection. The sequel, Naomis Too, is out now. 8th Grade Superzero (Scholastic) received a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly, was named an Amazon Best Book of the Month, a Notable Book for a Global Society by the International Reading Association (IRA), and a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People by the National Council for the Social Studies and CBC.

In 2018, my nonfiction picture book, SOMEDAY IS NOW: CLARA LUPER AND THE 1958 OKLAHOMA CITY SIT-INS (Quarto Kids), a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People, was published, along with ABOVE AND BEYOND: NASA’S JOURNEY TO TOMORROW (Feiwel and Friends/Macmillan). Coming in 2022: MAE MAKES A WAY (Crown/Random House), about the life of milliner Mae Reeves, SAVING EARTH: The Climate Crisis and the Fight for Our Future (FSG/Macmillan), and more!

I’m the editor of the We Need Diverse Books middle grade anthology, THE HERO NEXT DOOR, (Crown/Random House). I’ve also contributed to several anthologies, including WE RISE, WE RESIST, WE RAISE OUR VOICES (Crown/Random House), edited by Cheryl Willis Hudson and Wade Hudson; THE JOURNEY IS EVERYTHING: Teaching Essays That Students Want to Write for People Who Want to Read Them, edited by Katherine Bomer (Heinemann); IMAGINE IT BETTER: Visions of What School Might Be, edited by Luke Reynolds (Heinemann); and BREAK THESE RULES: 35 YA Authors on Speaking Up, Standing Out, and Being Yourself, edited by Luke Reynolds (Chicago Review Press).
