The Year Jerry Garcia Died is an insightful, well written, soft spoken novel with hard truths. The story, set in San Francisco, recounts the major events in the life of the unnamed narrator, during the year 1996. He watches in horror as a distraught man leaps from the Golden Gate Bridge; as one of his friends has her head blown off in her own driveway while he cowers helplessly in his car. This slim volume takes on powerful issues of sexual longing, friendships, race relations, sexual orientation and worker’s rights-and above all, change.
